Sporle Saint Mary's Church, near Swaffham, has west tower, nave, north and south aisles, chancel and north chancel aisles. The 14th century tower has a well moulded western doorway with niche above. Good 13th century arcades with five two-light clerestory windows, but modern roofs and fittings. 13th century Purbeck octagonal font, standing on high base with three steps at the cardinal points splayed like a Maltese cross. In the south aisle is a curious arch-braced beam and a set of 25 paintings, these depicting the legend of Saint Catherine. 13th century angle piscina in north chancel aisle. (Cautley) There is a clock, and 3 bells, the style is mainly transitional Early English and Decorated. There is a fine doorway with niche above. Some mural paintings have been discovered. And there is a good modern rood screen and several 19th century stained glass windows. The 13th century font is of interest. (LOCKED)
