Stalham Saint Mary Church NR12 9AU

Stalham Saint Mary Church, not knowing the area, and sent here when popping in the postcode for Ingham, i inadvertantly found myself at the back of the church, not knowing how at first to get to the front other than walk. For me and any diabled person, this is too far. I suggest turning right and parking to the front of the church, though you will have to fight for a disabled space. square west tower, 1 bell, nave with aisles, chancel and south porch. The chancel is Decorated, the nave arcades and clerestory late Decorated. the latter has small circlular windows with quatrefoil lights. The aisles are Perpendicular. The tower, which is late 14th century, has been reduced in height. much renovation took place in 1872 when the porch was rebuilt. There is a 15th century brass and a later one to the Riches family dated 1624. There is a fine carved font of much interest, it has a bowl carved with the Baptism of Our Lord and group of Saints and a corona vaulted and the base carved with a trail. It stands on three steps, the top two traceried. The base panels of the rood screen remain, but only a few cusped heads of ancient heads! Somewhere is said to be five painted panels, one of the rare Saint Roch. The church has been much over-restored and the chancel and porch rebuilt and has modern roofs and fittings.
