Swaffham Saint Peter and Paul Church.

The Saint Peter and Saint Paul Church at Swaffham, a beautiful church, spoken about by many people and in it one of the most famous of Norfolk's characters, "The Pedlar and his Dog! I have three different versions of this local book written by Mary C. Rowsell! The Pedlar can be seen cut into pew ends, his Dog also. Legend has it that John Chapman dreampt that he should go to London Bridge to seek his fortune, (A bit like one Dick Whittington, incidentally found on my family tree) There he met a shopkeeper who laughed at such dreams and said that if he believed them he would believe his own dream that treasure lay buried under a tree in Swaffham Market. the pedlar returned home and dug under his own tree and found a pot of gold. A second pot was found later and John became a wealthy man.
John Chapman was Churchwarden in 1462, and paid for the North aisle, south porch and much more besides!
The Saint Peter and Saint Paul Church at Swaffham, built between the years of 1454-1465, tower 1507-1510, the church was built on the remains of a previous church which had partially collapsed, the chancel and roof having fallen in completely, the date of that church is unknown. the present church built of brick, flint and Barnack stone. (Oolitic Lincolnshire limestone, including some called "Barnack rag", was a valuable building stone first used by the Romans) Building such as Ely and Peterborough. there are several carvings in the church, "The Pedlar and his Dog" as mentioned above, four evangelists, Saint Matthew, a man or angel, Saint Mark, a lion, saint Luke, an olox and Saint John, an eagle. There is also a pelican with fledglings in a nest " a Pelican in her Piety" is the emblem of Passion. Swaffham has a "Black Book" , this lists the names of 123 benefactors and gives the names of fifty two people who had promised sums of money, this money ranging from twopence to six shillings and eight pence, this for the repair of the tower.
The organ is built or constructed by Norman & Beard Ltd of London.
