I arrived at Swainsthorpe Saint Peter Church, I walked down the long drive to the church. On reaching the door, it was pointed out that the key could be obtained from two homes nearby. One opposite. Being disabled and having to limit my distance when walking, this was not on. This however I did! i knocked and was greeted by a lovely lady who got the key and suggested where I return it. Four trips then! On getting inside, i saw what was little more now than a glorified village hall. The pews had gone, what items were left were covered up either with the said chairs or other pieces of furniture. The Holy Water Stoup, font, organ, and even the pulpit. Churches must learn to attract people in ways that the structure of the church is not compromised. Arrange, music sessions, film shows, youth clubs, art lessons. Talk about religion, how things have changed with the church over the ages. It was a nice church, but ripped to pieces. I was told that the church is locked and the Key Holder sign as such because of a certain element in the village, stealing or vandalising. It will certainly not draw people like me in. Swainthorpe, Saint Peter Church, written by Messent, something of what I expected to see: Near Norwich, round west tower with octagonal upper storey, (plus) 4 bells, nave with north aisle, chancel and south porch. The base of the tower is Norman, but much later above, The rest of the church exhibits all three periods of Gothic, most of the windows being Perpendicular insertions.  The south porch was rebuilt in 1885. There is a fine carved hammer-beam roof to the nave. (plus) The font is Norman and of interest (plus). There is a monument to John Dearsley died 1765, and a brass to Capt. Gilbert Havers, died 1628. Also a memorial tablet to the Rump family. (plus but some covered up. There was previously another church of Saint Mary, this has gone into decay above the foundations.
