Swannington Saint Margaret's Church
Swannington Saint Margaret's Church. (being repaired).

Swannington Saint Margaret's Church, Square west tower, 3 bells, nave with aisles, chancel and south porch. This church exhibits all three periods of Gothic, the tracery in the Decorated windows of the chancel being particularly fine. The east window is a Perpendicular insertion. The tower is of rather squat proportions. There is a plain 13th century north doorway and a nice late 15th century porch with flush panelled base-course and in the spandril of arch is depicted the legend of the patron saint. Above this a band with I.H.S. Nazerenes and at the top a sundial with raised figures. Typical 13th century octagonal font to north aisle with traceried spandrils and curious plain roof to south aisle, the common rafters spanning it with no principals or purlins. The aisles extend to the west face of tower which rests on great piers, with tower and two side arches. The walls of chancel are simply arcaded with seats below them, and the roof has arch-braced cambered tie-beams with tracery above them and a low-pitched roof with flowers at intersection of purlins and subsidiary principals. Nice 14th century sedilia with shallow arched piers and cinquefoiled ogee arches, with good carved spandrils the whole surrounded by ornament. The pillar piscina is extraordinarily interesting and was discovered in the rood loft stairs. It is Norman with a delicately carved cap with Saint George and the Dragon. A richly carved table dated 1635 and the Arms of George III inscribed "The Gift of John Bladwell 1762".
