Thorpe next Haddiscoe, Saint Matthias , It was whilst visiting Thorpe next Haddiscoe that I met a lovely man called Colin Willis, ex teacher. Colin had what I thought a vast knowledge of churches, he even pointed me in the next direction of the next I would visit at Thurlton. Thorpe next Haddiscoe, Saint Matthias was a beautiful Round Towered church. it had one of the oldest fonts I have seen, square in shape, one large centre pedestals, a smaller leg on each corner holding up the bowl. The tower is Saxon and part of the nave Norman, the rest later. The chancel was rebuilt in brickwork in 1836. There is a double aumbry, (a small recess or cupboard in the wall of a church). and a bible, dated 1617, preserved in the church. The church features a Mass Dial, clearly added before other alterations as its located inside the south porch where the sun does not shine since its erection. There is inside a rood stair that is clearly visible on the north side. Thorpe next Haddiscoe, Saint Matthias, west tower, south porch, nave and chancel. The nave is thatched. The tower is undoubtedly pre-Conquest in its lower stages, with shallow arcading surrounding it, all worked in flint, and the top stage was added in Norman times and has double windows, with knotted central shaft. A double splayed circular window is high up on east side. Simple Norman doors north and south remarkable for being 5'11" high. Modern roofs and benches, a 13th century typical Purbeck font, large double lockers in west wall and Jacobean table and chest.
