Thwaite, All Saints Church, After setting the sat-nav for Alby, I came across what I can only describe as somewhere I have never heard of in Norfolk, for some this might not seem unusual, but to me, born and raised in the county and having spent a large amount of my working life around this area, Thwaite was not the one place that rolled off my tongue. On parking, I noticed another car, at least if like so many there was no sign or pamphlet, I could ask someone where exactly I was and the churches name etc. Though there was a lady inside the church I was over whelmed with the church rather than ask questions. I signed in, noticed other inscriptions that other people had put and really, I found this beautiful, airy, light little round towered church totally different to what they had described. Thwaite, All Saints Church, was a total surprise for me. I couldn't even remember it being on the RTS site. Mortlock and Roberts described the church as having a round Norman tower, it is smooth and tapers slightly up to a 14th century bell openings. There is a blocked doorway low down on the south side and inside, the outline of a tall and narrow original arch. The rood screen is 15th century and has been cut down to the middle rail, but remains of gesso decoration show that it must have been beautiful. Little canopied figures are like that similar to those at Aylsham. There is a plain dark tall pulpit, backboard and tester, they are dated 1624. The builder of the aisle chapel was John Puttok he died 1442 and there is a brass to him and his wife. I didn't see the school rooms they mentioned, but did see the signature of one J Spurgeon Aldborough January 26th 1832 Glazier scratched into the window near the door. There is a monument by Nursey of Bungay to the Rev. Richard Dreyer. 1838.

Taken from the Scarrowbeck Benefice site, Very sadly thieves stole the lead off the roof in the side aisle earlier this year. Since then funds have been raised and the roof has been replaced with stainless steel which is of no value to the thieves. The thief has been caught and prosecuted so we hope he will learn the error of his ways!
