Tibenham All Saints Church,

Tibenham All Saints Church, what a beauty! Box Pews, stylish 15th century octagonal font bowl on eight pedestals surrounding a large centre spindle., square west 15th century tower with chequered buttressing on each corner and chequered base course, south porch, chancel chapel and aisle, there is an astounding amount of Jacobean woodwork here, much wall paintings too. That was my short description of this church. (H.Munro Cautley) wrote: w. tower, s. aisle, chancel and s. chancel chapel. Nice early 15th century tower with good chequered base-course and chequered buttresses and the emblem of the evangelists as pinnacles. Niche below w. window, 15th century octagonal font with eight small columns round central traceried shaft and traceried bowl. Early 14th century arcade. The nave roof has tie-beams and an arch-brace striking from foot to wall-posts and the aisle roof is braced with pierced and traceried spandrils. There was a small window over the chancel chamber arch, and on the n.side of this arch is an arched recess, mutilated by the later and wider arch, which is painted on the back I think, of The Saviour, though the figure is not nimbed. Fragments of the 15th century screen remain on the e. side of Buxton pew and think part built into the tower screen. Hatchments decorate it and in the chapel are Arms of George I, with carved frame and a coloured female figure in the broken pediment.

There was an RAF Tibenham during WWII - mostly occupied by the USAAF .... they even had an Operations Officer called James Stewart .
Think the place is now owned by the Norfolk Gliding Club and I also believe that a memorial to the Liberator crews of the USAAF's 445th Bombardment Group stands on the airfield and I've also heard that there might be a museum of some sort somewhere there to the USAAF who used the place.
Some photos of the airfield and a bit of blurb about it can be found at:
