Toftrees All Saints Church

Toftrees All Saint's Church.

Toftrees All Saints Church, A lovely church, I like it, but so do the bats. Every attempt is being made, but the church is locked due to the displeasure of bats. Everything of value is either gone or covered. Toftrees has one of the most beautiful fonts I have seen. Standing on five pedestals, this square bowled font stands with a bird atop, and heads carved into its lid. Late Saxon and medieval church, with reused Roman tile in the walls. The church was remodelled in the 13th century, and the west tower was built in the 14th century. Pottery have been found in the churchyard. A 15th century stone cross stands in the churchyard. Toftrees All Saints Church, west tower, south porch, nave and chancel, the tower is without its belfry stage but has sound holes. Plain 13th century doorway, modern roofs and benches and a very nice Stuart table and rails. One of the finest Norman fonts in Norfolk and the Arms of George III, near Fakenham, 1 bell, nave, chancel and south porch. The tower is left unfinished and is roofed at what would probably have been half its height. The walls are mainly late 13th century with some later windows inserted. There is a very fine carved Norman font with a large square basin carried on five columns, each with carved Norman capitals and bases. A few towers, as at Felmingham and Toftrees, were never finished.
