Wickmere, Saint Andrew Church, NR11-7JE.

Wickmere, Saint Andrew's Church is one of the 125 round towered churches of Norfolk that still survive. Listed in The Domesday Book of 1086 it is mentioned as an ancient church. Wickmere then known as Wicmera, meaning Lake by a dairy farm. Old English wic (Dairy Farm) + mere lake. Listed in The Domesday Book as remains, not a fully working church. This means the church was probably of bad repair when the DB was written. Major renovations happened in 1552, 1593, 1779, 1866, 1901 and 1938, these done through donors such as the Dix and Walpole families. the last contribution was from English Heritage of £250,000 in 2009. In the churchyard was the parish Bier house, a wooden holding for the funeral bier cart. This was 19th century. For 800 years a church has stood where Wickmere church stands, and all this time the round tower of the Normans has remained like a castle keep. In our own time, while whilst A. Mee was touring Norfolk for his book, the old church has had its strength renewed in memory of the Earl of Orford. He lies in his earl's robes on a monument of English marble from Derbyshire, a fine hand carved by Esmond Burton, who has shown him with one hand on his heart and the other on his sword. Wickmere, Saint Andrew's Church, near Aylsham, round west tower, 1 bell, nave with aisles, chancel and south porch. The base of the tower is Norman with some slight signs of Saxon work, but later above. The rest of the church is mainly in the Decorated period. The late 14th century rood screen has been restored. There are some old niches inside this church, some with colouring. The old altar stone is preserved. There are a number of memorials to the Walpole family. Some poppy-headed pews remain. There is a brass to the Greenway family in the south aisle, dated 1494. There is some fine 14th century ironwork and a Sanctuary knocker onthe south door. There are some signs of ancient mural paintings.
