Woodbastwick St Fabian and St Sebastian Church
Woodbastwick St Fabian and St Sebastian Church

Woodbastwick St Fabian and St Sebastian Church, west tower, south porch, nave and chancel. This church is entirely thatched and showing some signs that I will need repairs to the front soon. The church suffered a most drastic restoration 70 years ago and the top of the tower is new, but retains its old sound holes and santus bell window. The cambered tie-beams with arch-braced king posts above may be old, but all else is modern, well except the interesting 15th century square headed screen. It has lost it's colour, but retains its double-tracery which is most interesting, because between the layers of tracery it is filled in with wood cut to the cusping, the tracery on head is most delicate. Woodbastwick St Fabian and St Sebastian Church,2 bells, nave, chancel and south porch. This church is mainly in the Decorated style, but was much restored and renovated in 1879 by A, Cator, Esq., under the direction of Sir G. Gilbert Scott, R.A. The roofs are covered with thatch, there are some memorial windows to the Cator family, who have been freat benefactors to the church. The lovely screenhas delicate tracery above the arches, a band ofquatrefoils on the base, and new cornice of foliage and cresting. Dragons, a griffin, lions and grotesque animals are on the arm rests of the fine stalls, and the rerdos has paintings in medieval colours of the Nativity scene with the wise men and figures of the four Evangelists. The new open oak pulpit and new font are richly carved. The Peace memorial to eight men is a grey and green panel of marble, with lovely mosaic showing a kneeling Saint George with his sword, clad in silver armour and a gleaming red mantle. There is a richly illuminated foll of honour on sheep-skin. A tablet to Peter Dunster tells us that he had been vicar for 56 years when he died, aged 92 years old in our own century. An earlier vicar, Benjamin Youngs, served from 1681 till 1736.
